Why the Real Problem Is Misrepresenting Christ and Weaponizing Tolerance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Ryan \u201cDickie\u201d Thompson \u2013 The Punk Rock Libertarian<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2011, an article titled <em>\u201cI\u2019m Christian Unless You\u2019re Gay\u201d<\/em> by blogger Dan Pearce, better known as \u201cSingle Dad Laughing,\u201d struck a chord across social and religious communities. The piece went viral\u2014lauded as a heartfelt call to Christians to reevaluate their treatment of LGBTQ individuals. Cultural memory matters\u2014especially in an era where controversial content quietly disappears when it no longer serves the narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pearce Piece: A Plea for Kindness&#8230; with Strings Attached<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pearce\u2019s central point is a valid one: too many people who call themselves Christians treat gay individuals with disdain, contempt, or fake kindness. As someone who\u2019s lived in Mormon culture and witnessed plenty of pious backstabbing, I get it. I've called that hypocrisy out for years. It's gross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But where Pearce loses me\u2014and where I felt compelled to speak up\u2014is when he uses that hypocrisy to <em>reshape<\/em> what Christianity actually teaches. He goes beyond &#8220;we should be kinder&#8221; and veers into &#8220;if you disagree with homosexuality, you're not a real Christian.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That's dishonest. And more than that\u2014it's manipulative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Christ Was Not a Doormat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear: Jesus Christ taught love, mercy, and redemption. But He was not some feel-good hippie high on forgiveness who let anything slide in the name of inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>Matthew 16:23<\/strong>, Jesus tells Peter: <em>\u201cGet behind me, Satan.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Matthew 21:12<\/strong>, He drives out the money changers with a whip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Matthew 23:33<\/strong>, He calls the Pharisees <em>\u201cYou snakes, you brood of vipers.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pearce writes as though Christ never judged anyone. That\u2019s simply false. Christ judged <em>many<\/em> people\u2014mostly religious elites and hypocrites. He never shied away from calling out sin, especially when it was clothed in self-righteousness. So to say, \u201cIf you\u2019re Christian, you have to affirm gay relationships\u201d misrepresents Scripture and patronizes Christians who take the Bible seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Everyone\u2019s Tolerant\u2014Until They\u2019re Not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pearce suggests that the world would be better if we were simply more tolerant. But here\u2019s the truth: <strong>everyone is intolerant of something<\/strong>. Tolerance has boundaries. Even the most open-minded person has lines they won\u2019t cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not a flaw. It\u2019s human nature. It\u2019s how society functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t tolerate murder, theft, or abuse. We make judgment calls every day\u2014about character, danger, trustworthiness, health, and values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I lived on Capitol Hill in Seattle\u2014a neighborhood that\u2019s predominantly LGBTQ\u2014I saw a kind of reverse intolerance that rarely gets talked about. I saw tattoos that said <em>\u201cNo Breeders\u201d<\/em>, referring to heterosexuals. I knew gay folks who mocked straight couples as selfish for having children. That\u2019s not just intolerance\u2014it\u2019s <strong>tribalism<\/strong>, and it cuts both ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because you\u2019ve been mistreated doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re incapable of mistreating others once you\u2019re in power. That\u2019s a lesson Christians and LGBTQ activists alike need to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Real Love vs. Emotional Blackmail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The kind of \u201clove\u201d Pearce is advocating for isn\u2019t love\u2014it\u2019s <strong>emotional blackmail<\/strong>. If you don\u2019t agree with someone\u2019s life choices, you\u2019re accused of hate. If you stand on Scripture, you're labeled a bigot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not love. Love says, \u201cI care about you even if I disagree.\u201d That kind of love is harder. It doesn't win likes or clicks. But it\u2019s honest. And it\u2019s the only kind of love that leads to <em>actual<\/em> peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, Pearce\u2019s blog post\u2014which was designed to create understanding\u2014shut down conversation by demanding conformity. Agree with him, or you\u2019re not a real Christian. That\u2019s not unity. That\u2019s ideological conformity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I Support Gay Rights\u2014Because I'm Libertarian<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me be absolutely clear: <strong>I support gay marriage<\/strong>. Not because I affirm the lifestyle, but because I believe in freedom. The government has no business telling people who they can or can\u2019t marry. I supported <strong>Ron Paul<\/strong> for this reason\u2014he consistently defended personal liberty across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also believe Mormons should be able to practice polygamy if it\u2019s between consenting adults. If you\u2019re not hurting children or violating others\u2019 rights, government should stay out of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liberty doesn\u2019t mean celebrating everything. It means choosing your own path, and letting others choose theirs. As long as you respect others\u2019 rights, your personal life isn\u2019t my business\u2014and mine isn\u2019t yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mob Mentality Is the Real Danger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The danger isn\u2019t Christian hypocrisy or gay pride\u2014it\u2019s <strong>mob mentality<\/strong>. It\u2019s the herd psychology that leads any group, once it becomes a majority, to marginalize others. I saw it in Mormonism. I saw it in LGBTQ communities. I saw it in politics. And I see it today in cancel culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pearce complains about Christians forming a \u201cmob\u201d against gay people. But what about LGBTQ activists who call for people to be fired, banned, or censored for holding traditional views on marriage? What about the social mob that attacks anyone who won\u2019t post a rainbow emoji in June?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not justice. That\u2019s just a <strong>different uniform for the same army<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When You Talk About Christ, Be Honest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to reach Christians, don\u2019t insult them by misrepresenting Christ. Don\u2019t paint Him as someone He wasn\u2019t. That\u2019s not persuasive\u2014it\u2019s offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not going to convert someone by telling them the Son of God was a pacifist doormat. You\u2019ll just make them tune you out. Instead, talk about Christ as He was: <strong>a radical teacher of truth<\/strong>, who confronted the powerful, defended the vulnerable, and took sin seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts: I Support Dialogue, Not Dogma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan Pearce made good points. But he wrapped them in a message that demands one-sided tolerance. That\u2019s not a road to peace\u2014it\u2019s a road to quiet resentment and deeper division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I made my video because I want <strong>honest dialogue<\/strong>. I want to talk about uncomfortable things. I want to challenge my own biases and yours. I\u2019ve marched in pride parades. I\u2019ve opposed Proposition 8. I\u2019ve spoken out in favor of gay marriage and personal liberty. But I won\u2019t stand by while Jesus gets twisted into a mascot for whatever cultural movement is trending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">References:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul
