If you\u2019ve traveled through the Philippines, Asia, Africa, or even parts of Europe, you\u2019ve seen couples holding hands with 15\u201320 years between them. It isn\u2019t scandalous\u2014it\u2019s simply part of life. Historically, it was normal. My landlord in Puerto Rico, a Pentecostal pastor, was married to his wife for 61 years. They wed at 14, raised a family, built a life, and never once apologized to the world for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, though, our culture reacts to such relationships with outrage\u2014especially when the man is older. The double standard is obvious. When a 50-year-old woman dates a 30-year-old man, she\u2019s a \u201ccougar,\u201d and people cheer her on. But when a 50-year-old man dates a 30-year-old woman, he\u2019s a \u201ccreep.\u201d Same numbers, different judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Science and Culture Actually Say<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jordan Peterson has pointed out that women across cultures tend to prefer men about four years older. Why? Because women\u2014especially when considering marriage and children\u2014look for stability, maturity, and security. That isn\u2019t oppression. That\u2019s biology and common sense. A young woman doesn\u2019t want to raise <em>two<\/em> children\u2014she wants a partner who is dependable, competent, and ready for responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Men, on the other hand, gain market value as they age. They accumulate wisdom, networks, resources, and experience. That\u2019s why throughout history, older men pairing with younger women was not scandalous but expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real problem isn\u2019t age\u2014it\u2019s immaturity. A 35-year-old man who refuses to date anyone older than 22 isn\u2019t \u201cmature\u201d; he\u2019s stuck in a shallow loop of chasing youth for its own sake. There are beautiful women at 30, 40, even 50. Reducing attraction to nothing but age is not wisdom\u2014it\u2019s escapism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Infantilization of the West<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s where things get strange: In past generations, 16-year-old boys lied about their age to fight wars. They took on adult responsibilities early because they had to. Today, we\u2019ve stretched adolescence into people\u2019s 30s. We\u2019ve built a society where 25-year-olds are treated like children and adults are encouraged to think of themselves as perpetual victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some even argue we should <em>raise<\/em> the age of adulthood to 25 or 30 because people aren\u2019t \u201cready.\u201d But that\u2019s not maturity\u2014that\u2019s infantilization. And it isn\u2019t just affecting relationships\u2014it\u2019s eroding responsibility across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people in the West sneer at age-gap couples, they\u2019re not really making a moral point. They\u2019re reflecting a culture that has lost touch with adulthood itself. We\u2019ve blurred the lines between childhood and adulthood so badly that \u201c18\u201d doesn\u2019t mean what it once did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consent, Culture, and Liberty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be clear: I\u2019m only talking about consenting adults. No libertarian worth his salt is arguing for anything outside of that. But within the realm of consent, people should be free to choose without being shamed by society\u2019s ever-changing double standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a 22-year-old woman prefers the stability of a 40-year-old man\u2014so what? If a 50-year-old woman prefers a 30-year-old man\u2014who cares? The beauty of a free society is that adults decide for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deeper question is this: why are we so quick to shame men for having preferences while celebrating women for theirs? Women can openly say they only date tall men, wealthy men, or older men. But the moment a man says he doesn\u2019t want to date obese women, or that he prefers women under 30, he\u2019s labeled \u201ctoxic,\u201d \u201cshallow,\u201d or worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This cultural asymmetry reveals something important: modern Western society doesn\u2019t just infantilize adulthood\u2014it polices masculinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Age-gap relationships aren\u2019t automatically wrong, exploitative, or creepy. Like all relationships, they succeed or fail based on compatibility, respect, and mutual benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What <em>is<\/em> wrong is a culture that infantilizes adulthood, demonizes men for having preferences, and treats consent as meaningless unless it aligns with progressive social norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words: it\u2019s not about the age gap\u2014it\u2019s about whether we believe in personal responsibility and voluntary choice.
