The script rarely changes. We\u2019ll be talking about music, our childhood in Utah, or addiction recovery, and before long it shifts into accusations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re too religious.\u201d<br>\u201cYou\u2019re pushing your beliefs on me.\u201d<br>\u201cYou were a skinhead when you were a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it\u2019s extended even further. His wife\u2019s family? Racists. The people he doesn\u2019t like? Nazis. It\u2019s the same tired line that we hear on cable news and social media every single day: <em>everyone I don\u2019t agree with is a Nazi<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The irony is that this exact script has played out not just in my family, but across culture. I even wrote my story into a <strong>biography back in 1999<\/strong> \u2014 it\u2019s still online in the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20091022110847\/http:\/\/mystory.behindzioncurtain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Internet Archive<span class=\"wpil-link-icon\" title=\"Link goes to external site.\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 5px;\"><svg width=\"24\" height=\"24\" style=\"height:16px; width:16px; fill:#000000; stroke:#000000; display:inline-block;\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:svg=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><use href=\"#wpil-svg-outbound-1-icon-path\"><\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>. I denounced racism back then, and I still do today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My first girlfriend was Navajo back then. My closest friends were Polynesian. My favorite bands were anti-racist ska groups like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The first concert I ever saw at age 12 was ska \u2014 not hate rock, not white power music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve lived in the Philippines for a long while now. My son is Filipino. To this day, my family is mixed and multi-ethnic. I have no pastor, no pulpit, no pew. Yet if I mention that I quit drugs at 19 after an encounter with the Holy Spirit, suddenly I\u2019m \u201ctoo religious.\u201d Suddenly I\u2019m \u201cpreaching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, my brother \u2014 who calls himself an atheist \u2014 takes his kid to Mormon church. My brother has been ordained in that system. So who\u2019s more religious?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I actually believe is simple: the Romans corrupted Christianity. They edited the Bible, built a church to save their empire, and turned faith into politics. But we\u2019ve since uncovered older manuscripts \u2014 the <a>Nag Hammadi library<\/a> and Gnostic gospels \u2014 that predate Roman canon. They show a faith closer to Judaism and focused on righteous living here and now, not on eternal damnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not church religion. That\u2019s history. That\u2019s philosophy. It\u2019s all the same template \u2014 someone offends you, so they must be racist, sexist, Nazi, fascist, or whatever label fits the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, real political violence is minimized or ignored. That\u2019s mainstream politics in America right now. Death threats against conservatives aren\u2019t even headline news anymore, while \u201cmean words\u201d on Twitter get turned into full-blown moral panics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defamation, Victimhood, and Free Speech<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What frustrates me most isn\u2019t disagreement. It\u2019s the cheapness of the labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accusing someone of being a racist or Nazi without evidence is defamation. It\u2019s a way to win an argument without ever addressing the argument. It\u2019s politics by character assassination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve seen the same tactic used against Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk, Jordan Peterson \u2014 the list goes on. And I\u2019ve seen it used in my own family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I refuse to let false labels define me. I\u2019ve been open about my past, my mistakes, and my beliefs. I\u2019ve written them, archived them, and stood by them. I\u2019ve fought for free speech and honest discussion for more than 20 years on radio and podcasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If discussion is replaced with defamation, then free speech is dead. And if family conversation can\u2019t exist without name-calling, then family suffers too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is simple: I\u2019m not a racist, I\u2019m not a Nazi, and I\u2019m not out here preaching religion. I\u2019m someone who believes in conversation, history, philosophy, and freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If my brother or anyone else disagrees, that\u2019s fine. But disagreement isn\u2019t hate. Criticism isn\u2019t fascism. And having faith in something greater doesn\u2019t make me a zealot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe one day, we\u2019ll be able to talk about addiction, music, and growing up in Utah without dragging racism and religion into it. But until then, I\u2019ll keep defending myself from false labels \u2014 because the truth matters more than the narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
