Hate is lazy, it\u2019s corrosive, and it makes people easy to control. I\u2019ve watched families split and friendships die over politics, religion, and sex. That\u2019s not \u201cprinciple.\u201d That\u2019s wasted life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"1981\">I\u2019ve got gay family members. I\u2019ve got transgender kids. I\u2019ve also got strong opinions about how I want to live in my own home. But hear me clearly: gay people are not my enemy. My enemy is anybody who wants to use the state as a weapon, whether they\u2019re waving a rainbow flag, a Bible, or a party banner.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3141\" data-end=\"3257\">The whole point of <strong data-start=\"3160\" data-end=\"3188\">libertarian gay marriage<\/strong> is that I don\u2019t get to run your life, and you don\u2019t get to run mine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3259\" data-end=\"3426\">That means you can build your home the way you want, and I can build mine the way I want. It also means we don\u2019t smear each other as monsters just because we disagree.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3428\" data-end=\"3469\">Disagreement is normal. Hate is optional.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3471\" data-end=\"3528\">2) Liberty first, always, even when it\u2019s uncomfortable<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3530\" data-end=\"3730\">I\u2019ve been speaking my mind on hard topics for over two decades. And I\u2019ve learned something the hard way: if your \u201cprinciples\u201d only apply to people you like, you don\u2019t have principles. You have a club.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3732\" data-end=\"3929\">So yes, I defend rights for people I disagree with. That is the backbone of <strong data-start=\"3808\" data-end=\"3836\">libertarian gay marriage<\/strong>. Rights aren\u2019t a reward for ideological obedience. Rights are boundaries around state power.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3931\" data-end=\"4080\">If the government can deny marriage to one group today, it can deny it to another group tomorrow. It can deny it to you. When politicians play games with that, they aren\u2019t \u201cdefending tradition.\u201d They are lighting other people\u2019s lives on fire for applause.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6162\" data-end=\"6337\">And if you\u2019re the kind of official who wants to deny services because you \u201cdisagree,\u201d then you\u2019re telling the world you don\u2019t believe in equal treatment. It means the \u201coverturn it tomorrow\u201d crowd keeps running into the wall of legal reality.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"7026\" data-end=\"7089\">7) My line in the sand: equal rights, not special privileges<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"7091\" data-end=\"7145\">Now we get to the part where everybody starts yelling.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7147\" data-end=\"7302\">I support equal treatment. I do not support special legal status. I don\u2019t want one rulebook for gays, one rulebook for straights, one rulebook for anybody.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7304\" data-end=\"7345\">That\u2019s where <strong data-start=\"7317\" data-end=\"7336\">hate crime laws<\/strong> come in.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7347\" data-end=\"7455\">If you punch somebody, you punched somebody. If you rob somebody, you robbed somebody. The act is the crime.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7457\" data-end=\"7691\">When you add sentence enhancements based on identity categories, you\u2019re not just punishing violence. You\u2019re punishing thoughts and motives. And that\u2019s where governments get addicted, because it gives prosecutors a new political lever.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7693\" data-end=\"7847\">Plenty of people disagree with me on this, and I get why. Some argue hate crime enhancements reflect broader social harm or intimidation of a whole group.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7849\" data-end=\"7868\">I\u2019m still not sold.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7870\" data-end=\"7956\">I want the same standard for everyone. That\u2019s the cleanest version of equality I know.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"7958\" data-end=\"8010\">8) \u201cI don\u2019t approve\u201d isn\u2019t the same thing as hate<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"8012\" data-end=\"8175\">I\u2019m an ordained minister. That means I take vows seriously. It also means I\u2019m not going to pretend my beliefs evaporate because someone on the internet demands it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8177\" data-end=\"8328\">Here\u2019s the distinction that gets people twisted: I can disagree with choices and still defend rights.
