Why would someone who favors civil rights and liberty join the Republican Party?

I often have discussions with folks, some times heated discussions, about why a civil liberty advocate or any person who cares about civil rights would join the Republican party. I have seen a lot of propaganda that implicates Republicans throughout history as being specifically racist, and anti-civil rights. I have also seen a bunch of propaganda that implicates Republicans as being responsible for the national debt, etc.

So, I had to go do the research myself to clear the air. For me, if I had only two parties to choose from and I had to choose in order to vote (for primaries as an example), then I would register as a Republican between the choices of Republican vs. Democrat.

Obviously, I do not agree with or condone George W. Bush’s policies. He was a menace to this country and a disgrace.

However, historically Republicans have a much better record than Democrats do in regards to fiscal responsibility and civil rights (which I believe are interconnected).

Here are the facts that I have gathered along with references:

Civil Rights in American history – Which party has contributed the most?

  • The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws in the United States enacted between 1876 and 1965. They mandated de jure racial segregation in all public facilities in Southern states of the former Confederacy, with a supposedly “separate but equal” status for black Americans.

“During the Reconstruction period of 1865–1877, federal law provided civil rights protection in the U.S. South for “freedmen” – the African Americans who had formerly been slaves. In the 1870s, Democrats gradually returned to power in the Southern states, sometimes as a result of elections in which paramilitary groups intimidated opponents, attacking blacks or preventing them from voting. Gubernatorial elections were close and disputed in Louisiana for years, with extreme violence unleashed during the campaigns. In 1877, a national compromise to gain Southern support in the presidential election resulted in the last of the federal troops being withdrawn from the South. White Democrats had regained political power in every Southern state.[5] These conservative, white, Democratic Redeemer governments legislated Jim Crow laws, segregating black people from the white population.”

As for who has increased the national debt?

  • Under Woodrow Wilson and a Democrat led congress the Federal Reserve was established in 1913

The Federal Reserve has led to the manipulation of our currency, and the wealth shift that has destroyed the middle class.

  • Here are the recent numbers of who actually has increased the national debt:

When Bush took office on January 20th 2001, the national debt was:

$5,727,776,738,304.64

When Bush left office on January 19th 2009, the national debt was:

$10,628,881,485,510.23

That is an increase of:

$4,901,104,747,205.59

When Obama took office on January 20th 2009 the National Debt was:

$10,626,877,048,913.08

Today (01/28/2012) the National Debt is:

$15,236,231,788,440.22

That is a increase of:

$4,609,354,739,527.14

So while Bush was in office for 8 years, and Obama has only been in office for 3 years, the National Debt has had an almost equal increase.

If we consider the certainty of what Obamacare will cost, then we can add that cost to his account, whether he wins the election for a second term or not.

In the Reagan years, which is what a lot of liberal types talk about when defending Obama’s spending habits:

When Reagan took office in 1981 the national debt was $678 Billion. In 1989 when Reagan left office it was approx 1.499 trillion.

The total increase was $810 Billion in both of his terms.

When Clinton took office 01/20/1993
The Nationa Debt was: $4,188,092,107,183.60

When Clinton left office: 01/19/2001
The National Debt was: $5,727,776,738,304.64

That is a difference of:
$1,539,684,631,121.04

Which is almost twice the increase during the Reagan years.

Obama has increased the National Debt 5.69 times as much as the “big spender” Ronald Reagan did.
